The Helldiver was slow, hard to fly and delivered late. Its nickname of ‘Son of a Bitch, Second Class’, was apt. This was not to say it was not good at its main role and, indeed, it proved quite versatile, but the overall design was responsible for the deaths of many US pilots before it was phased out completely. Over 7,000 Helldivers were built between 1943 and 1945.
